About

I’m Brian Towey - a guy with too many hobbies and some of them don’t match.

The hobby that I’ve always been the best at is cars.  Like most “stick and ball” sports guys I believe that my sport has a metaphor for everything that happens in life.brian-emerson2

I was a bike guy before I was a car guy, though.  And, these days I spend more time with bicycles than I do with cars.  I also like coffee shops and brew pubs – I was in the coffee business for a while and I make my own beer.

I worked on boats (in real boat yards) when I was a teenager.  I traveled the coast of British Columbia to Alaska on a 16 ft boat.  I’ve been to the Bonneville Salt Flats, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, several Grands Prix and sat in the right seat of a race car for four days during a World Championship Rally.  I take my bicycle with me everywhere.  I am Motathlon Champion of the World (yeah, I know…) and won a Pinewood Derby trophy once!  I’d be as much at home with a cheap beer watching NASCAR as I am sitting at cafe in Paris watching the Tour de France – just so long as the food is good (trust me when I say that French beer and food aren’t sure things…).

It seems there ought to be a way to tie some of these things together and share them with other people in a way that makes somebody think – or better, smile…  So, here we are.

Here you will find some good bike rides, and as man must eat and drink, they will start and end near places that I think are good places to do both.

You will also find my thoughts about experiences that I have tricked myself into – well, experiencing.

Troglodyte meets Renaissance man – that’s me.

  1. Brian, how does one get in touch with you via email / Twitter?

    Thanks

  2. Hey Brian,
Came across your name on the SCCA website. I have been looking to purchase a VW TDI Cup Edition and was wondering what classification it would fall under which lead me to check the SCCA site, no luck their, but came across you. Thought I’d say hey.
    Been a while later

    • Michael Bailey that I worked with almost 25 years ago?

The way I would work out where that car would be classified is to spend some time with the GCR and / or talk to some of the VW guys (there must be a forum somewhere that they argue about such things).

But, once you’ve decided which guy wins the argument – check it against the GCR.

      Best of luck.

  3. Hey Brian,
Yeah, it’s me from like a quarter of a century ago. Thanks for the reply. As it turns out I was set to fly down to CA to pick up that car had negotiated over the phone and comfirmed in email with photos and details. The Sales Mgr sold the vehicle out from under the salesman while he was checking on his Mom in the hospital. Was totally bummed for a while, but now I have an AUDI Titanium Edition TDI with paddle shifters on order up here in WA, should arrive in about 1 month. Don’t have plans on racing it as it’s more for commuting.

    Anyway, Stay Strong!
